Projection Theory

Alternative Technology

In addition to traditional solutions, there are alternative technologies that can be used in place of different system components such as the cooling system and light engine. Here we will discuss new and alternative technologies.

LED's As a Light Source
So far it has not been done successfully, but LED's may hold the key to building a smaller LCD projector that could run off of a lantern battery and produce very low levels of heat. The concept behind using LED's as a light source is to cluster them together in large arrays and place them directly behind the LCD panel. This may or may not still require that a fresnel lens even be used at all since you can actually aim each individual LED at the projection lens instead of using the fresnel lens to bend the light.

Currently there are at least two problems with using LED's as a light source. Firstly, they have a very low CRI, or ability to reproduce colors from LCD panels. Along with this factor, it is also somewhat difficult to find LED's that are truly white with no trace of yellow or green. The other problem with LED's is brightness. Even though there are LED's bright enough to temporarily blind you if you look into them, they may still not be quite bright enough to drive an LCD projector. Testing is currently being implemented to determine whether they are bright enough.
